After The Storm

Pregnancy after loss.

Miscarriage, stillbirth, TFMR, neonatal loss — a previous loss does not disappear when a new pregnancy begins. Both stories live alongside each other. We try to make room for that.

Learn

Pregnancy after loss is a different country

Symptoms are not just symptoms; quiet weeks are not just quiet. Hypervigilance after loss is a normal nervous-system response, not a character flaw.

Both babies can exist here

Honoring the one who is not here does not take anything from the one who is. Many parents find their love for each grows in the same room.

Care that knows your history

Tell your provider, in writing if it helps, what happened and what you need at appointments — early scans, calmer language, more time.

Reflect

  • ·What does this week ask me to carry, and what can I set down for a moment?
  • ·What language do I want — or not want — at my next appointment?
  • ·Is there a small ritual that would let me say hello to this baby without letting go of the last one?

Affirmations

  • "Fear and love can sit in the same chest at the same time."
  • "Today is its own day. I do not have to predict the next one."
  • "I am not betraying anyone by feeling joy."

Expert Insights

From trauma-informed care

Calm is a body skill

After loss, the body learns to scan for danger. Grounding practices — long exhales, feet on the floor, naming five things you can see — are not 'positive thinking', they are giving the nervous system somewhere safe to land.

From attachment research

The bond is already forming

Becoming a parent begins long before the baby is in your arms. The mental and emotional preparation — what one tradition calls 'primary maternal preoccupation' — is the work, not a distraction from it.

From perinatal neuroscience

Your brain is reorganizing

The maternal brain is being remodeled during pregnancy — not damaged, not 'lost', reorganized for the task ahead. Forgetfulness is sometimes the visible edge of that reorganization.
